My career as a cosmetologist began in 1989. I attended Calvinade Beauty Academy in N.E. Washington, D.C. to receive my formal training in the cosmetology field. As a student I developed a repoire with the schools' clientele which enabled me to make a smooth transition into the work force in the salon environment. I began my career, taking my first job as a professional stylist at a salon located on H st. N.E. where I learned alot. Everyone there at the time was very seasoned in their craft. I was fortunate enough to have them show me some "tricks of the trade" to help me hone my craft. After being in the arena with some of the industry's best contenders, I heightened my skill level and my career took off. In 1991, I relocated to Maryland and familiarized myself with several salons over a period of years before deciding to try my hand at being a cosmetology instructor. Five years into my career, I became a very young instructor where most of my students were very close to my age or older. However, it didn't prove challenging to teach them because they respected the fact that I was experienced and very knowledgeable in my profession. I taught cosmetology for a total period of ten years alongside working in the salon. I have also done some platform work as well. I have managed a couple of salons and I plan to someday own a cosmetology school. Currently, I am self-employed. My place of business is at Mahogany Hair Salon in Bladensburg, Maryland and I am the CEO and President of HairPortfolios.
